Hazel – Adopted!
Hazel has been adopted. She got the all clear from her surgeon and was able to be adopted by a family who has been waiting patiently for her. When they came to get her, it was like I never existed. It was awesome. Here she is, tuckered out in her new home after a day of playing.
Wishing you all the best Hazel and family.
Great Saturday
We had a great day on Saturday. I took Kodiak and Baloo to Petsmart and they were great. Both of them were pretty mellow which is normal for the most part. They had played for about a half hour before we left and all the new action around them tuckered them out. It was a very quiet ride home! However, once we got here Paddington, Boo-Boo, Hazel and Whitley had to sniff them and of course instigate some more play time. It was pretty funny. You would think they hadn’t seen each other in weeks the way that they acted.
I have started working on name recognition with them. Nothing elaborate, its pretty elementry really. I say their name while looking them in the eye and give them a piece of kibble. If the other dogs aren’t around we work individually on “sit”. This week we may even tackle the “leash”!
Hazel goes to the vet this week for a check up on her foot. Keep your fingers crossed because she may get the all’s good to go to her forever home.
we can share
Hazel is doing really well. She is putting more and more weight on her foot each day. She is now navigating the stairs both up and down to the back door. There are very few accidents in the house, mostly just if she really has to go once she is out of her crate and trying to make it to the back door. Sit, come and laydown along with “crate” are all going well. Next up will be walking on the leash since she is able to do more.
Whitley and her are playing very well with each other. Whitley is pretty sensitive to Hazel’s healing. And then there is the “down” time the two of them share together.
Of course they try to be on the one pillow together. Whitley got there first and Hazel laid down behind her. She had a grand plan though …
Going on an outing
Saturdays from 1 – 3 ARF is at the Petsmart across from Chinook Centre. Now that Hazel has her stitches out and the cone off of her head, it is time to start rehabilitation on her leg. Each day she is getting stronger and putting more weight on it. When I touch and manipulate her foot she doesn’t seem to be bothered by any of it. Because she has so much energy I have started letting her be out of her crate as much as she wants. She is actually pretty calm and relaxed most of the time so I am not concerned with her hurting herself. When she does start to get too worked up because of Whitley or my son then its time for the leash and have her at my feet. I have noticed that each day her foot looks better and not as floppy.
Today I decided to take her to Petsmart to see the other puppies and be around some people other than me. It was a great day because I got to see her around other puppies. She wanted to play and play which was good. She got lots of pets and snuggles from the people there. We only stayed for about 45 minutes as she had the “heavy” sleepy baby eyes. I was really happy with the way the day went.

Playing with Hazel is hard work - being a good example as a foster mommy is tiring. I am gonna nap while hazel does too.
So, as you can see, everyone is settled in nicely. The pizza guy even came to the door today and there was NO barking from either dog. I think that is a first for Whitley. I think that fostering is going to be one of the best things I can do, not only for myself and for my son but also for Whitley to become a role model but to also learn that there are somethings you don’t need to be afraid of. Whitley already comes to get me if Hazel needs to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. She is becoming more confident! AND Hazel slept from 9:30pm to 4am last night. I woke Hazel up to go outside to pee!
locked up!
Here are the pictures that I promised. Hazel all locked up and kinda pathetic in an extremely cute and adorable way!
Now getting a picture of her is difficult, for some reason, whenever the camera comes close she either wants to sniff it or finds something else to do that will hide her face.
Eating, figuring out how to eat with the cone on took her a few minutes but Hazel soon mastered the challenge. Of course it helps when she gets some “grown up food” in her bowl for motivation. She loves Whitley’s food.
Whitley was rather curious about the cone on Hazel’s head along with the toys that were in the crate. Yes, the door to the crate is open and yet they still sniff through the metal.
Happy Puppy!! (actually she was trying to lick the camera at the time, but still … happy)
And here is a picture of her stitches, just a warning in case this stuff icks you out. They aren’t bad though. The incision is clean and is healing very well.
cage rest
Today Hazel got her splint off. Of course, it was replaced with something else … a cone. The poor girl has this cone on her head to keep her from chewing at her stitches and her foot. Also, Hazel has been put on cage rest. She has to not move around too much which means out of her crate to go to the bathroom and then back into her crate. If she is out of her crate when I am home she has to stay laying down and mellow.
Did I mention that she is only 2.5 months old? Yikes!
So, the hunt is on for things to entertain a puppy and keep her mind active. Once she has settled in I will take some pictures of her stitches, her leg and her cute face framed by a plastic cone!
All Fixed Up
Hazel is back from the Vet. I picked her up on Christmas Day. She seems to steal the hearts of all those who meet her. Because I didn’t want to leave her alone, not knowing how her pain would be, I brought her with me to our Christmas dinner. She was really good meeting everyone and ended up crashed between my legs as we all sat around. At dinner she slept under the table at my feet. We were up a few times last night for bathroom breaks due to her bladder infection but her pain seems to be getting better with each passing moment.
When we are outside she holds her paw up and runs on her other three feet. Even when I try to keep her mellow, when she is outside she is just happy! I ended up kicking Whitley and the other dog visiting me downstairs with bones to chew on so that Hazel could have time out of her crate without me worrying that she would start getting too excited with the other dogs. She played, chewed on a bone and some toys and then crashed on the couch for a bit.
I take her back to the Vet on Wednesday so that they can remove the splint and see how she is healing. Then again the week after so that they can check her bladder infection. It will be interesting to see what she is really like when she is fully healed and healthy – she is playful and fun now, so I can only imagine how much better she will be.
Hazel
Hazel was dropped off with me this afternoon. As I was still at work, I brought her inside with me and she proceeded to curl up at my feet and fall asleep. When it was time to head home she got into her crate with no issues. Once home, it was out into the backyard where she did all her “duties” before coming inside.
Once inside she looked around, saw the toys, checked out the water and I fed her a small bit of food while Whitley was out on her walk. She was able to play and nap and play some more. When Whitley got home she greeted her with a wagging tail – running outside after Whitley and learning to go pee when her big foster sister does. Lots of praise and the thumbs up sign to show Hazel that she is doing a good job.I am going to have to get another dog pillow though as they both like Whitley’s and Whitley won’t lay on it with her – yet.
Hazel seems to get around just fine even though her foot is gimpy. It looks more painful to watch her than it is for her – since she was tearing around the house and the backyard like a “normal” dog. Tomorrow is her surgery. I am glad she is here tonight so that she knows me once she comes back here.
At the moment the dogs are sleeping – Hazel in her crate and Whitley on her pillow.
