1st Annual Walk n' Wag

SPONSOR ME

The Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF) of Alberta is proud to host our first annual dog walk in support of the "Pad for Paws" campaign, raising money for a permanent facility. This event will be held on Sunday, September 26, 2010 at Calgary's River Park.

This is your opportunity to help the many stray and unwanted dogs and cats from rural areas and First Nations communities. ARF rescues these animals and places them in loving, permanent homes while providing programs to reduce pet overpopulation.

postheadericon Baloo – Adopted

Baloo went to her new home today. She has been adopted by a great family who will have a ton of time to play with her and kids to grow up with. It was a wonderful feeling to walk into their home with her today and watch her sniff around, wagging her tail and eventually fall asleep on one of the kids blankets.

Although its hard to say “see you later” to Baloo, its a very rewarding feeling knowing that she is with a wonderful family and her being adopted opens my home up for more puppies.

postheadericon Hazel – Adopted!

Hazel has been adopted. She got the all clear from her surgeon and was able to be adopted by a family who has been waiting patiently for her. When they came to get her, it was like I never existed. It was awesome. Here she is, tuckered out in her new home after a day of playing.

Wishing you all the best Hazel and family.

postheadericon Houston, we have flop…

Yes people, its not all pointy ears anymore (except for Baloo … hers are still straight up!)

As you can see with this last picture, Kodiak and Baloo were pretty wiped out on Saturday.

postheadericon Great Saturday

We had a great day on Saturday. I took Kodiak and Baloo to Petsmart and they were great. Both of them were pretty mellow which is normal for the most part. They had played for about a half hour before we left and all the new action around them tuckered them out. It was a very quiet ride home! However, once we got here Paddington, Boo-Boo, Hazel and Whitley had to sniff them and of course instigate some more play time. It was pretty funny. You would think they hadn’t seen each other in weeks the way that they acted.

I have started working on name recognition with them. Nothing elaborate, its pretty elementry really. I say their name while looking them in the eye and give them a piece of kibble. If the other dogs aren’t around we work individually on “sit”. This week we may even tackle the “leash”!

Hazel goes to the vet this week for a check up on her foot. Keep your fingers crossed because she may get the all’s good to go to her forever home.

postheadericon Settling in

The “bear” pups have been here for a couple of days now and everyone is finally becoming used to one another. I am getting up twice a night to let them out for a pee. Last night there were no accidents in the crates. Hazel has taken a bit of time to adjust to sharing her toys and belongings with them. That I can understand, who wants to share all these great plushy toys. Today however, was the first day where everyone actually settled down and slept OUTSIDE of their crates. Whitley was in the chair, Hazel was on the couch, Paddington had put himself into his crate, Kodiak fell asleep on a plushy and the girls went into Hazel’s crate.

These dogs crack me up. After about an hour of rest they had more play time and we went out for a pee. They followed me out by basically tripping over my feet. Paddington and Boo-Boo usually walk between my legs once I am standing outside or after going to the bathroom come and sit between my feet while I am waiting for us to go inside. Baloo likes to rub herself against my legs like a cat as she walks on by. Kodiak on the other hand will do his thing then comes over for some praise. We came inside and now all four of them are asleep in Hazel’s crate which they just barely all fit into. It is one big puppy pile.

After I took this picture they all got up, had some water, went back in and then Paddington came out of the crate, followed by Boo-Boo and curled up just outside of the crate and the other two are stretched out which looks way more comfortable (okay I lied, they have now all gone back into the crate!!)

postheadericon New Additions

Am I crazy? Some would say so, but I like to think that I am just “special”. (okay I have a weird sense of humor too).

This weekend when Hazel and I were at PetSmart on Saturday I mentioned that I could take more puppies since Hazel will hopefully be going to her forever home soon. Finding out that there are four pups that were getting fixed who needed a place to go. Of course I couldn’t say no!! ((come on, seriously! puppy kisses, puppy breath and puppy snuggles – not much is better than that – well maybe chocolate))

So, let me introduce you to the following fosters at Chez Morgan …

THE BOYS

Kodiak

Kodiak

Paddington

THE GIRLS

Baloo

Boo-Boo

Boo-Boo’s photo is from the ARF site because she was busy exploring or playing during picture time. At one point, I did try to get a picture but she came over along with the other three and I was attacked by the licking terrier mixes!

Puppy Pile!

Puppy Kisses!

The pups definitely have personalities. It will be interesting to see how they develop over the next couple of days as they get more comfortable here.

postheadericon we can share

Hazel is doing really well. She is putting more and more weight on her foot each day. She is now navigating the stairs both up and down to the back door. There are very few accidents in the house, mostly just if she really has to go once she is out of her crate and trying to make it to the back door. Sit, come and laydown along with “crate” are all going well. Next up will be walking on the leash since she is able to do more.

Whitley and her are playing very well with each other. Whitley is pretty sensitive to Hazel’s healing. And then there is the “down” time the two of them share together.

sharing this little pillow

Of course they try to be on the one pillow together.  Whitley got there first and Hazel laid down behind her. She had a grand plan though …

I knew I could get it to myself

postheadericon Going on an outing

Saturdays from 1 – 3 ARF is at the Petsmart across from Chinook Centre. Now that Hazel has her stitches out and the cone off of her head, it is time to start rehabilitation on her leg. Each day she is getting stronger and putting more weight on it. When I touch and manipulate her foot she doesn’t seem to be bothered by any of it. Because she has so much energy I have started letting her be out of her crate as much as she wants. She is actually pretty calm and relaxed most of the time so I am not concerned with her hurting herself. When she does start to get too worked up because of Whitley or my son then its time for the leash and have her at my feet. I have noticed that each day her foot looks better and not as floppy.

Today I decided to take her to Petsmart to see the other puppies and be around some people other than me. It was a great day because I got to see her around other puppies. She wanted to play and play which was good. She got lots of pets and snuggles from the people there. We only stayed for about 45 minutes as she had the “heavy” sleepy baby eyes. I was really happy with the way the day went.

Being sociable is so much work - I need a nap!

Sometimes naps are better when you cuddle with a friend

Playing with Hazel is hard work - being a good example as a foster mommy is tiring. I am gonna nap while hazel does too.

So, as you can see, everyone is settled in nicely. The pizza guy even came to the door today and there was NO barking from either dog. I think that is a first for Whitley. I think that fostering is going to be one of the best things I can do, not only for myself and for my son but also for Whitley to become a role model but to also learn that there are somethings you don’t need to be afraid of. Whitley already comes to get me if Hazel needs to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. She is becoming more confident! AND Hazel slept from 9:30pm to 4am last night. I woke Hazel up to go outside to pee!

postheadericon locked up!

Here are the pictures that I promised. Hazel all locked up and kinda pathetic in an extremely cute and adorable way!

Now getting a picture of her is difficult, for some reason, whenever the camera comes close she either wants to sniff it or finds something else to do that will hide her face.

Eating, figuring out how to eat with the cone on took her a few minutes but Hazel soon mastered the challenge. Of course it helps when she gets some “grown up food” in her bowl for motivation. She loves Whitley’s food.

Whitley was rather curious about the cone on Hazel’s head along with the toys that were in the crate. Yes, the door to the crate is open and yet they still sniff through the metal.

Happy Puppy!! (actually she was trying to lick the camera at the time, but still … happy)

And here is a picture of her stitches, just a warning in case this stuff icks you out. They aren’t bad though. The incision is clean and is healing very well.
